Some people reading this may be mistaken into thinking that I visited Bangor and Belfast in Northern Ireland on this trip, but in fact, we just made the 3 hour drive to Bangor, Maine for a short break before the busy summer season and what a great trip we had.

The newly renovated Sheraton at Bangor Airport was our first stopover, a great hotel if you are catching an early flight out of Bangor. The rooms are lovely and the hotel is attached to the airport by a walkway. This is our third stay at the Sheraton and we look forward to coming back each time. For our second night we moved to the Holiday Inn Express which is located in the main hotel area and roughly 10 minutes drive from the airport. A great bonus for us was the free admittance to Golds Gym right beside the hotel so we were able to work off the Hollywood Slots Buffet in the gym.

The town of Belfast is roughly 30 miles south of Bangor and what a delight it was; a very picturesque village on the riverside and full of small delightful shops, cafes, theatres and restaurants. Lots of trendy bookstores, organic shops and wonderful cafes, a really pleasant suprise.

Slightly further on we ventured to Fort Knox; a fort that never saw any action in anger even though it was built as a defence against English invasion. Overlooking the small community of Bucksport which has a very nice Best Western Hotel I would recommend a few hours here to tour the Fort and to take in the amazing views from the Penobscot Narrows Bridge and Observatory.

Leaving our normal diet aside for one evening we ventured into the brand new Hollywood Slots Hotel & Casino to sample their buffet and it was so delicious that we had 3 deserts. The choice was superb featuring Seafood, Soup, Rib-eye Steak, Chinese, Jamacian, Italian and much more. Great quality food, attentive service and a nice relaxed atmosphere. After dinner we proceeded to loose $5.00 in the slot machines. For a weekend away I would really recommend a stay in this new property.
