My Travel Diaries

Spain and the Costa Del Sol.

As a British expatriate it may not surprise you to learn that I have visited a few areas of Spain. I always thought of Espana (Spain) as a sea side destination, where Europeans could go for a quick beach break. Though recently Spain has refocused its tourism industry on its culture, reminding us that while the beaches are terrific there is a lot more to see and do.

Today I want to share with you my recent trip to Marbella and the Costa del Sol but firstly let me briefly mention the other Spanish destinations that I have visited.

My favourite area being that of the Canary Island of Tenerife, this volcanic island is a welcome retreat when you are looking to relax but still find plenty of activity, although if you have trouble walking up a hill this might not be the best destination choice for you.

Ibiza, one of the Balearic Islands is known for its party atmosphere and splendid beaches and I was not disappointed by my visit. Ibiza town was a highlight of my trip to this island, it was particularly cosmopolitan while keeping its Spanish design.

I have also visited the Costa Brava and the town of Lloret de Mar, this really is a well priced tourist hot spot, I didn’t find a secluded sanctuary here but I did find lots of nightly and plenty of beach activity. My grandparents love this spot in the cooler less crowded months.

Recently I travelled to Marbella for the annual Travel Counsellors conference. This is a relatively easy destination to reach from Canada. I took a direct flight from Vancouver to London, England with a connecting flight out to Malaga airport, which has regular coach connections to Marbella.

Although November was the end of the summer tourist season, I still managed to sit out in the sun most days and when it was cooler in the evenings I only needed something light to keep me warm, I certainly came back to Canada with a better tan then when I left and thankful for a bit of fall sunshine.

I chose to say at the Gran Melia Don Pepe a good sized property with contemporary rooms and lots of comfortable facilities. The view from the room was breathtaking, with ocean views and not a cloud in the sky. Stepping out the back of the hotel you come to a promenade that runs along a beautiful beach.

However, the highlight of my trip was a half daytrip to Malaga the capital of the Costa del Sol. A central focus overlooking the city is the Citadel (one of the largest Arab fortresses in the region) and it’s adjoining Castle of Gibralfaro, not only do these buildings have wonderful architecture and gardens, the picture perfect views are certainly worth following the skyward path for.

Locals are very proud that the famous artist Picasso was from this region, so a visit to Malaga wouldn’t have been complete without a visit to the Museo Picasso Malaga. Housing many examples of Picasso’s work, the museum really shows you how cleaver the artist was, even if it does leave you a little confused by what he was trying to portray.

During my trip to Spain the food and service was always of a very high standard and I really appreciated always having access to freshly squeezed orange juice.

If you choose Spain for your next trip I’m sure you’ll find there is something for everyone.
