The port town of Ocho Rios has historically survived on the strength of fishing and banana boats, but now it has an almost daily arrival of cruise ships and inquisitive tourists. Ocho Rios and its near neighbours Runaway Bay, Discovery Bay and Port Antonio are picturesque retreats for those seeking rest and relaxation.

Although the city of Ocho Rios is famous for its sun an sand, there is plenty to see and do in between bathing and sun-worshipping... from climbing up waterfalls to horseback riding through sugar cane plantations, or taking afternoon tea.

The surrounding countryside is lush and tropical, with fern-clad cliffs and breathtaking waterfalls, and a tour of the region to take in the scenery, like a drive through the famous three-mile vine-draped Fern Gully, is well worthwhile.

Some of my favourite attractions in Ocho Rios:

Dolphin Cove
Alongside the Dunn's river Falls in Ocho Rios is Dolphin Cove, where we were able to swim with a family of Bottle Nose dolphins. The natural cove is surrounded by four acres of lush tropical rain forest. The cove is also home to other marine life.

Dunn’s River Falls
About two miles from Ocho Rios, Dunn’s River Falls cascades down 600ft forming cool pools among slippery rocks, and if you’re brave enough, you can climb the Falls.

Bob Marley Mausoleum
Reggae music fans from around the world make the pilgrimage to the famed singer/songwriter's grave site at the village of Nine Mile, about 40 miles south of Ocho Rios.

Green Grotto Caves
These huge labyrinthine caves are often considered Jamaica's most prominent natural attraction. They are located between Ocho Rios and Montego Bay, just a few kilometres from Discovery Bay and Runaway Bay.
